Foundation subject reports are often written last, in the shortest amount of time, with the least energy. They deserve better than that — and with a bank of solid starting phrases, they don't have to take long.
Here are phrases for the subjects that often get squeezed.
Science
- “[Name] approaches science with genuine curiosity. She asks excellent questions and is developing the skills to investigate them rigorously.”
- “He understands scientific concepts well and is particularly strong at explaining his reasoning.”
- “She is developing her ability to plan and carry out fair tests, recording her findings accurately and drawing thoughtful conclusions.”
- “[Name] contributes enthusiastically to science discussions and is growing in his ability to use scientific vocabulary correctly.”
- “She has made good progress in science this year and shows a real interest in how the natural world works.”
PE
- “[Name] participates in PE with enthusiasm and is developing his skills across a range of activities.”
- “She is a confident and capable athlete who shows real commitment in games and individual activities alike.”
- “He is developing his understanding of tactics in team games and is a positive, supportive team member.”
- “[Name] shows good physical coordination and is beginning to refine her technique with focused practice.”
- “He approaches PE with a great attitude — he works hard, encourages others, and takes the learning seriously.”
Art and Design
- “[Name] is a genuinely creative student whose artwork consistently shows originality and skill.”
- “She approaches art with real focus and produces work that she thinks carefully about — not just technically but expressively.”
- “He is developing his observational drawing skills and is beginning to make deliberate choices about technique and medium.”
- “[Name] engages with artists' work thoughtfully and uses what she learns to influence her own practice.”
RE
- “[Name] engages thoughtfully with questions about belief, meaning, and values — she brings real sensitivity to discussions.”
- “He is respectful and curious in RE, listening carefully to others and contributing ideas of his own.”
- “She is developing her understanding of different faith traditions and approaches this learning with an open mind.”
PSHE
- “[Name] engages meaningfully with PSHE topics and shows real emotional intelligence in discussions.”
- “He is developing his understanding of relationships, health, and wellbeing in an age-appropriate way.”
- “She contributes honestly and thoughtfully to PSHE discussions, and clearly thinks carefully about the values we explore together.”
Computing
- “[Name] approaches computing with enthusiasm and is developing strong skills in both programming and digital literacy.”
- “She understands online safety well and applies it sensibly in her use of technology.”
- “He is a methodical and capable programmer who perseveres when his code doesn't work first time.”
