The United KingdomYear 1 Lesson Plan

National Curriculum: Geography KS1 — locational knowledge: name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas

Overview

Pupils learn the names of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, locate their capital cities, and identify the surrounding seas. They develop locational knowledge using maps and begin to understand the difference between a country, a capital city, and a region.

Learning Objectives

  • Name the four countries of the United Kingdom.
  • Locate England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland on a map.
  • Name the capital cities of each UK country.
  • Identify the seas surrounding the UK.

Key Vocabulary

United Kingdom
A country made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
capital city
The most important city in a country, often where the government is
country
An area of land with its own government and laws
coast
The land next to the sea
border
A line dividing two countries or regions
island
A piece of land surrounded by water on all sides

Suggested Lesson Structure

10m
Warm-up

Ask: where do you live? What country are we in? Do we all live in England? Collect responses and introduce the idea that the UK is made up of four countries.

20m
Teaching input

Display a map of the British Isles. Introduce the four countries: England (capital: London), Scotland (Edinburgh), Wales (Cardiff), Northern Ireland (Belfast). Colour each one on the class map. Identify the surrounding seas: English Channel, North Sea, Irish Sea, Atlantic Ocean. Discuss: the UK is an island nation — most of it is surrounded by sea. Note that the Republic of Ireland is a separate country.

15m
Guided practice

Pupils label a blank map of the UK with the four countries and their capitals using a word bank. Add the surrounding seas. Check together.

10m
Independent practice

Pupils create a simple 'UK passport page' for one of the four countries: name, capital city, a drawn flag, and one interesting fact from an atlas or information sheet.

5m
Plenary

Quick-fire quiz: 'What is the capital of Scotland? What sea is to the west of Wales? Name the four countries of the UK.' Celebrate achievements and consolidate key vocabulary.

Common Misconceptions

  • Pupils (and sometimes adults) confuse 'England' with 'Britain' and 'the UK' — these are different: Britain = England, Scotland, and Wales; the UK includes Northern Ireland too.
  • Thinking London is the capital of the whole UK — it is the capital of England and the seat of the UK government, but each country has its own capital.

Prior Knowledge

Pupils should already be able to:

  • Awareness that we live in England (or the UK).
  • Basic understanding of what a map shows.
  • Some familiarity with the concept of countries from topics studied.
