Year 5 Maths Scheme of Work
In Year 5, pupils extend their knowledge and skills across all areas of mathematics. Place value is extended to numbers up to 1,000,000, and pupils develop formal written methods for all four operations including long multiplication and short division. Fractions, decimals and percentages are increasingly connected, and pupils develop fluency in moving between them.
Geometry in Year 5 includes angles, translation, reflection and properties of shapes. Statistics extends to line graphs and the interpretation of data in a range of contexts. Problem solving and mathematical reasoning are integral to every strand, with pupils expected to justify their methods, identify patterns and generalise.
Expected prior knowledge
- ✓Fluency in all times tables to 12 x 12
- ✓Ability to add and subtract four-digit numbers using formal column methods
- ✓Understanding of equivalent fractions, decimals to two decimal places
- ✓Knowledge of properties of 2D shapes and ability to measure angles
Units across the year
Six half-term units covering all strands of the KS2 Maths programme of study.
Long Multiplication
- –Multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method
- –Multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000
- –Recapping short multiplication as a foundation for long multiplication
- –Using the grid method to connect to the formal long multiplication algorithm
- –Practising long multiplication with four-digit by two-digit numbers
- –Solving multi-step problems involving long multiplication
Percentages
- –Recognise the per cent symbol and understand that per cent relates to number of parts per hundred
- –Solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 2/5, 4/5
- –Using hundred squares to represent percentages visually
- –Converting between percentages, fractions and decimals
- –Finding percentages of amounts using mental and written methods
- –Solving real-world percentage problems involving discounts and surveys
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
- –Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number
- –Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other
- –Using fraction bars to add and subtract fractions with different denominators
- –Finding a common denominator to enable addition and subtraction
- –Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions
- –Solving word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions
Geometry: Properties of Shapes
- –Identify 3D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2D representations
- –Know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles
- –Classifying 2D shapes by their angle and side properties using Venn diagrams
- –Identifying and measuring reflex angles using a protractor
- –Exploring regular and irregular polygons and identifying their properties
- –Drawing and labelling 2D shapes accurately using a ruler and protractor
Mean and Statistics
- –Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables
- –Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in a line graph
- –Calculating the mean (average) of a data set and interpreting its meaning
- –Comparing two data sets using the mean and range
- –Reading and drawing line graphs with varying scales
- –Solving problems from timetables and real-world data tables
Position and Direction
- –Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language
- –Use coordinates in the first quadrant
- –Plotting and reading coordinates in the first quadrant
- –Translating shapes on a coordinate grid and describing the movement
- –Reflecting shapes in horizontal and vertical mirror lines
- –Extending to all four quadrants as enrichment
Progression into Year 6
In Year 6, pupils will apply all four operations to fractions, ratios and percentages, and will be introduced to algebra. Geometry will extend to calculating angles in a variety of contexts and using the properties of shapes to reason and solve problems.
