Overview
Pupils learn to demarcate sentences with capital letters and full stops. They practise identifying where sentences begin and end, understanding that a sentence expresses a complete thought, and begin to apply this consistently in their own writing.

Suggested Lesson Structure
Display a short paragraph with no capital letters or full stops. Read it aloud without pausing. Ask: was that easy to understand? What could help? Establish that sentences need a start and an end.
Explain that every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Model writing three sentences, thinking aloud about where to use each. Use a 'sentence sandwich' visual: capital letter is the top bun, full stop is the bottom bun, words are the filling.
Pupils add capital letters and full stops to a set of sentences written in continuous lower case. Work in pairs, then share and check as a class.
Pupils write three sentences about a picture prompt (e.g. a park scene), remembering to start each with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
Read back one pupil's sentences aloud. Count the capital letters and full stops together. Ask: does each sentence make complete sense?
Common Misconceptions
- Pupils often use capital letters for words they consider important (e.g. 'Dog', 'Sun') rather than only at the start of sentences and for proper nouns.
- Forgetting the full stop when a sentence runs into the next — model pausing and re-reading to find where one thought ends.

Pupils should already be able to:
- Ability to write some letters of the alphabet.
- Awareness from reading that text is made up of words and sentences.
