Nouns and Noun PhrasesYear 3 Lesson Plan

National Curriculum: English Appendix 2 — Grammar: noun phrases expanded by the addition of modifying adjectives, nouns and preposition phrases (Year 3/4)

Overview

Pupils revisit nouns and learn how to expand them into noun phrases by adding adjectives, determiners, and prepositional phrases. They explore how expanded noun phrases make writing more precise and vivid, and practise using them in descriptive writing.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify nouns and noun phrases in sentences.
  • Expand noun phrases using adjectives and determiners.
  • Use prepositional phrases to add detail to noun phrases.
  • Apply expanded noun phrases to improve descriptive writing.

Key Vocabulary

noun
A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
noun phrase
A group of words built around a noun that acts as a single unit.
adjective
A word that describes or modifies a noun.
determiner
A word placed before a noun to indicate which one, e.g. 'the', 'a', 'some', 'those'.
prepositional phrase
A phrase beginning with a preposition that adds detail about place or time, e.g. 'with sharp claws'.
expand
To make something longer or more detailed by adding extra words.

Suggested Lesson Structure

10m
Starter

Display simple nouns (dog, castle, river). Ask pupils to add one word to describe each. Collect ideas and introduce the idea that we can add even more detail.

20m
Teaching input

Explain the noun phrase structure: determiner + adjective(s) + noun + prepositional phrase. Model building expanded noun phrases step by step: 'dog' → 'the dog' → 'the fierce dog' → 'the fierce dog with yellow eyes'. Show how these improve writing by comparing two versions of the same sentence.

15m
Guided practice

In pairs, pupils expand a set of simple nouns using a given structure. Share and compare — discuss which additions are most effective and why.

10m
Independent practice

Pupils write a short description of a setting (e.g. a forest or castle), using at least four expanded noun phrases. Encourage variety in structure.

5m
Plenary

Share two or three descriptions. Underline the expanded noun phrases. Ask: 'What does the extra detail add for the reader?'

Common Misconceptions

  • Pupils often string too many adjectives together ('the big, huge, enormous, scary dog') — teach that two well-chosen adjectives are more effective than five.
  • Some pupils confuse adjectives with adverbs — reinforce that adjectives modify nouns, not verbs.

Prior Knowledge

Pupils should already be able to:

  • Ability to identify nouns in a sentence.
  • Familiarity with common adjectives.
  • Basic understanding of what a phrase is.
