Year 2 Maths Scheme of Work
In Year 2, pupils consolidate and extend their understanding of number and place value to 100. They develop fluency in the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables and use this knowledge to solve problems involving multiplication and division. The formal written column method is introduced at the end of the year for appropriate learners, building on expanded methods.
Pupils explore fractions, including halves, thirds and quarters of shapes and quantities. Measurement covers a wider range of contexts including money, mass and capacity. Geometry involves properties of 2D and 3D shapes and simple reasoning about position and direction. Statistics is introduced through the interpretation of pictograms, tally charts and block diagrams.
Expected prior knowledge
- ✓Secure knowledge of place value to 20 and ability to count to 100
- ✓Fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 20
- ✓Ability to count in 2s, 5s and 10s
- ✓Understanding of halves and quarters through practical sharing activities
Units across the year
Six half-term units covering all strands of the KS2 Maths programme of study.
Place Value to 100

- –Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
- –Representing two-digit numbers using Dienes apparatus and place value charts
- –Partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones
- –Ordering and comparing two-digit numbers on number lines
- –Finding 10 more and 10 fewer than a given two-digit number
Addition and Subtraction: 2-Digit Numbers
- –Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally
- –Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
- –Adding two two-digit numbers using Dienes and number lines without regrouping
- –Solving subtraction problems using counting-on strategies
- –Estimating answers before calculating and checking with the inverse
- –Solving word problems involving addition and subtraction
Times Tables: 2, 5 and 10
- –Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables
- –Solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials and arrays
- –Building multiplication tables using repeated addition and arrays
- –Practising rapid recall of times table facts using games and flashcards
- –Using multiplication facts to solve related division problems
- –Solving multiplication and division word problems using bar models
Halves and Quarters
- –Recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity
- –Write simple fractions and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2
- –Folding and cutting shapes to find halves, thirds and quarters practically
- –Finding fractions of sets of objects by sharing into equal groups
- –Comparing fractions and identifying equivalence between 2/4 and 1/2
- –Solving problems involving fractions of quantities using bar models
Time: Quarter Past and Quarter To
- –Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour
- –Know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day
- –Practising reading quarter past and quarter to on analogue clocks
- –Matching analogue and digital times for quarter past, half past and quarter to
- –Calculating time intervals using number lines
- –Solving problems involving time in everyday contexts
Statistics: Pictograms and Bar Charts
- –Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables
- –Ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category
- –Collecting class data and organising it into tally charts
- –Drawing and interpreting pictograms with a key
- –Constructing block diagrams and bar charts from data sets
- –Asking and answering questions about data including most common and least common
Progression into Year 3
In Year 3, pupils will extend calculation to column addition and subtraction, learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, and develop their understanding of fractions including unit fractions and fractions on a number line.
