Year 4 Science report comments

Year 4 science covers living things and their habitats, the digestive system and teeth, states of matter, sound and electricity. These comments are written at three levels of attainment.

15 example comments across 3 levels, plus 6 next steps. Type a name below to fill in every comment.

Working at greater depth / exceeding expectations

[Pupil] has an excellent understanding of electricity. They build circuits confidently, identify conductors and insulators and explain why a bulb lights or does not.

[Pupil] can explain how solids, liquids and gases behave and describe evaporation and condensation in the water cycle with real clarity.

[Pupil] understands how sounds are made and travel. They explained how pitch and volume change with precise scientific vocabulary.

[Pupil] can name the parts of the digestive system and explain what each does. They also understand food chains, including producers, predators and prey.

[Pupil] is a skilled investigator who plans fair tests, takes accurate readings and uses classification keys with confidence.

Working at the expected standard

[Pupil] can build a simple circuit and is learning to explain which materials are conductors and which are insulators.

[Pupil] knows the three states of matter and is learning how materials change state when heated or cooled.

[Pupil] understands that sounds are made by vibrations. Explaining how pitch and volume change is their next step.

[Pupil] can name the main parts of the digestive system and the different types of teeth.

[Pupil] works well in investigations and is beginning to use classification keys to group living things.

Working towards the expected standard

[Pupil] enjoyed building circuits and is learning to name the components, with support.

[Pupil] is beginning to sort materials into solids, liquids and gases.

[Pupil] knows that sounds can be loud or quiet and is learning how they are made.

[Pupil] is learning about the digestive system and keeping teeth healthy. Talking about healthy habits at home will help.

[Pupil] takes part in practical science with enthusiasm and benefits from support to record and explain results.

Year 4 science next steps

Finish a comment with one specific, achievable target. Parents find these the most useful line in a report.

  • Explain why a circuit works or does not work.
  • Sort materials into conductors and insulators.
  • Describe evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.
  • Explain how the pitch and volume of a sound change.
  • Use a classification key to group living things.
  • Take accurate readings, including temperature in degrees Celsius.

How to use these comments

Replace [Pupil] with the child's first name and adjust any detail that does not fit your class or school style. These comments are designed to be a solid starting point, not a finished product. The best report comments are the ones where you have added something specific about that child: a particular achievement, a moment you remember, a challenge they have worked through.

If you want to generate comments that are already specific to your pupils, Staffroom does exactly that. Add your notes about each child, choose a tone, and the comments it generates will be genuinely personal rather than adapted from a template.

Want comments written specifically about your pupils?

Staffroom generates personalised report comments from the notes you have kept about each child throughout the term. Every comment is different, and every one sounds like you wrote it. Free plan, no card required.
