Year 2 Science report comments

Year 2 science covers living things and their habitats, plants, animals including humans, and the uses of everyday materials. These comments are written at three levels of attainment and include next-step targets.

15 example comments across 3 levels, plus 6 next steps. Type a name below to fill in every comment.

Working at greater depth / exceeding expectations

[Pupil] has a strong understanding of living things and their habitats. They can explain how animals depend on each other and build simple food chains with confidence.

[Pupil] carried out our plant-growing investigation with real care, explaining what plants need to grow and stay healthy and comparing their results with others.

[Pupil] understands how animals, including humans, grow and change. They can explain why exercise, a healthy diet and good hygiene matter.

[Pupil] thinks carefully about the uses of materials, explaining why some are better suited to a job than others and how some can be squashed, bent, twisted or stretched.

[Pupil] asks interesting questions and suggests sensible ways to answer them. Their observations are detailed and recorded clearly.

Working at the expected standard

[Pupil] can sort things into living, dead and never alive and name some animals and their habitats. Explaining how a habitat meets an animal's needs is their next step.

[Pupil] knows what plants need to grow and observed our seeds and bulbs closely. They are learning to describe the changes in more detail.

[Pupil] understands that animals have offspring that grow into adults. They can name some healthy choices for humans.

[Pupil] can identify and compare the uses of everyday materials. They enjoy practical tasks and are learning to explain their choices.

[Pupil] works well with others in science and is beginning to record results in simple tables.

Working towards the expected standard

[Pupil] enjoys science, especially practical work outdoors. They are learning to name common animals and the places they live.

[Pupil] knows that plants need water to grow and is learning about other things they need, such as light.

[Pupil] is learning about how humans grow and stay healthy. Talking about healthy food and exercise at home will help.

[Pupil] can name some everyday materials and is learning what each one is used for, with support.

[Pupil] is building their science vocabulary and benefits from adult support to explain what they have observed.

Year 2 science next steps

Finish a comment with one specific, achievable target. Parents find these the most useful line in a report.

  • Explain how a habitat gives animals what they need.
  • Build a simple food chain and explain what it shows.
  • Describe what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
  • Explain why exercise, healthy food and hygiene matter.
  • Compare materials and explain why one suits a job better.
  • Record results in a simple table.

How to use these comments

Replace [Pupil] with the child's first name and adjust any detail that does not fit your class or school style. These comments are designed to be a solid starting point, not a finished product. The best report comments are the ones where you have added something specific about that child: a particular achievement, a moment you remember, a challenge they have worked through.

If you want to generate comments that are already specific to your pupils, Staffroom does exactly that. Add your notes about each child, choose a tone, and the comments it generates will be genuinely personal rather than adapted from a template.

Want comments written specifically about your pupils?

Staffroom generates personalised report comments from the notes you have kept about each child throughout the term. Every comment is different, and every one sounds like you wrote it. Free plan, no card required.
